| On Christmas day (2006) a F2 tornado touch down on the Daytona Beach International Airport and moved east towards Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Once on the Riddle ramp, the tornado destroyed around 50 of the total 70 airplanes. About half of these airplanes stayed on the ramp and the other half were tossed up to 1000 feet, some into the Advanced Flight Simulation Center (pictured on the right). The AFSC had holes punched into the sides from pieces of airplanes. The tornado also damaged many of the buildings on campus. Total damage was estimated to be around 50 million dollars. Fortunately since it was Christmas day there was only just a few people on campus and they were not injured. If the tornado had hit the campus on a busy day, many students and faculty could have received serious injury or even killed. These photos were taken from different people just after the tornado hit and the next few days. Click on any of the pictures above to view 154 pictures of the tornado damage. |
